This year under the latest revision of the attendance policy, students who do not turn in an excuse within three days of being absent get zeroes for all classwork on the day they missed. The district is taking every possible measure to improve attendance, but this measure goes too far.
Students feel they are punished enough for absences. If a day of school is missed, students cannot participate in clubs and athletics for that day. If they miss more than 10 days, excused or not, they are considered to be on social probation and going to prom comes into question.
It is unfair to hit students twice. Punishment through academics should not even be considered. This policy does not measure academic ability, just the ability to remember to bring in an excuse.
Students who know the material well could end up having their grade drop or even failing a class if they miss a major test.
This new policy should be revoked. Bringing in attendance excuses is important, but it should not determine student grades.

Thank you for this informative article. It is an unfair part of the attendance policy to lower grades.
Does the attendance office accept emailed excuses?
In regard to attendance, the notifications emailed to parents on their child’s attendance of absence comes too late.
Thank you.
