Sia’s newest album is composed of rejected songs that she wrote for various artists, and it shows. Not only are the songs mind-numbingly repetitive and dull, they also have little value beyond a few somewhat catchy lyrics. In the song “Sweet Design” she makes a crude attempt to rap and sounds like a cheap Nicki Minaj impersonator. All of Sia’s natural vocal ability is mangled behind layers and layers of synthesizers and other overly loud instruments. However, two songs that stick out as decent are “Alive” and “Space Between,” in which Sia showcases her natural vocal ability and evokes emotions with the rawness of the songs. Fans of her previous album, 1000 Forms of Fear, will be left disappointed at her newest venture into the music industry. Sia is criticized for her refusal to show her face often in public, but after listening to her newest album in its entirety, her choice is quite understandable.
