Blue Man Group act gets old quickly

The BMG in Brazil circa 2009.

The Blue Man Group does not live up to the hype.

For a music group, the music was clearly second in importance to the Blue Men performing tricks at a recent show in Chicago. The show was more like a circus act than a concert.

The Blue Men rarely played instruments, and when they did it usually involved splashing paint on drums. There was a trio of musicians in neon and black clothes who were very skilled, but they kept playing the same rhythms over and over while the Blue Men threw things around.

There were multiple presentations throughout that did not fit into the rest of the show. It seemed rather random and was completely unrelated to what the Blue Men were doing.

It was entertaining at first to see the Blue Men behave like buffoons, but the joke got tired quickly. It is like watching the Three Stooges – no one wants to do that for too long.

The Blue Men taking audience members up to the stage and pulling pranks on them was pretty cool, though. It made the show a lot less repetitive because each person called up was clearly not prepared to be.
