Acclaimed director Richard Linklater returns after the highly successful and Academy Award nominated Boyhood with the spiritual sequel to his 1993 cult favorite Dazed and Confused. The film picks up where both Dazed and Boyhood left off by centering its story on the life of a college student. In Texas in the fall of 1980, college freshman Jake (Blake Jenner) meets his new baseball team, and they navigate their way through the freedoms and responsibilities of unsupervised adulthood. Linklater again provides another stellar soundtrack that feels like each song was individually plucked from someone’s vinyl collection. Also, Linklater’s masterful script makes the film seem natural: It flows as the characters have conversations with one another while posing questions about identity. Unlike Dazed and Confused, the film focuses on the escapades of the “boys” instead of intertwining both men and women, so female audiences may not like the objectification of women. Fans of Dazed and Confused or Animal House will enjoy this soul-searching film where young people find out who they are through the experience of college.
