The recent terror attacks in places like Paris and San Bernardino have raised concerns about school-sponsored trips to other countries and other parts of the United States.
Rather than cancel all of them, school administrators have decided to allow club sponsors to decide the fate of each trip on an individual basis.
The German Club trip to Germany, Austria, and Italy that was scheduled for this June has been canceled, while the Latin Club trip to Italy and the French Club trip to Paris will continue normally. The Da Vincian Society delayed its planned December trip to New York City until spring.
The decision to defer to the club sponsors was a smart move, considering the safety situation is different in each destination.
It would be unwise to make any sort of blanket decision without considering the differing elements involved. The club sponsors, who have been working for months to organize the trips, are best informed to make those decisions.
Most importantly, the sponsors are ultimately responsibility for the smooth running of the trip and the safety of the participating students, so they should be the ones to decide whether or not to continue the trips as planned.
