Horror film ‘Night Swim’ sinks to the bottom

Blumhouse’s latest film, Night Swim, ends up being a mediocre, frightless horror movie about a haunted swimming pool.

The month of January is notorious for having subpar horror movies. This one is no exception.

Night Swim is bland, with nothing that stands out positively. It has a pretty small cast, and they all deliver decent acting. But when looking deeper into the writing, it becomes apparent that there is not one original idea in this movie.

The typical haunted house trope is tossed head-first into a pool, and there’s the classic “parent died to save their kids, so the family keeps living in the haunted area” trope, which is boring to see again.

This movie is basically The Amityville Horror on a diet and in a swimming pool.

Besides the unoriginality, there also are no scares in this “horror” film. The spirit in the pool is seen about three times, and never clearly until the last 10 minutes. Its appearance could only be described as confusing. There are small bits of tension but nothing even close to a chill-down-the-spine moment.

Co-produced by James Wan, creator of the Saw and Insidious franchises, this film was expected to be much better than the final product.

Overall, it’s generic and not worth any time or money. Stay home and wait for a better horror release.
