Aespa’s second studio album, Lemonade, experiments with genre-blending elements like hyperpop and R&B.
The title seems to be rooted in the idiom, “when life gives you lemons, make lemonade,” implying they are turning criticism into something positive.
Standout tracks such as “My Plan” and “Camouflage” carry a dreamy, R&B atmosphere. “Switchblade,” featuring Ty Dolla $ign, is an upbeat track.
Despite the album’s strengths, “Roll” is the weakest track because it feels a bit juvenile and with its literal nursery rhyme interpolation.
Additionally, “Lemonade” is lyrically confusing and feels like a recycled version of their previous release, “Whiplash.” The chorus line, “I’ll make it lemonade,” sounds oddly distorted, making the vocal delivery feel slightly off.
Overall, Lemonade has its highs and lows. It’s a decent album that new listeners will probably have to give a few repeat listens for tracks to click.
