Radiohead guitarist Ed O’Brien’s second solo album, Blue Morpho, is a solid effort.
The seven-song album is about 38 minutes long, and it is O’Brien’s first solo album since his 2020 album, Earth.
O’Brien starts off the album with “Incantations,” a soft track that transitions to a louder, more fast-paced song. “Incantations” sets the tone for the rest of the album, with the quick switches between smooth, calm tracks, to faster, more chaotic songs.
The album really showcases O’Brien’s range on the guitar as well as his vocal ability.
A highlight of the album is “Teachers.” It starts off with a bass-heavy crescendo that leads into a smooth, more vocal section. Then it finishes with chaotic sounds that keep the listener focused.
Another highlight of the album is “Obrigado,” which is a smooth track that features more vocals than most of the other tracks. O’Brien is able to blend his vocals with his guitar to create a high quality sound.
There aren’t really any bad songs on the album, but there are some songs that don’t really stand out, like “Thin Places.”
Overall, the album is solid. It is a bit out of the blue considering how long ago he released his last solo album, but it is not a bad surprise.
