Season three of the HBO original series Euphoria has changed direction, making this season very different from previous years.
Though only six episodes have been released so far, it’s not looking too promising for the remainder. It’s been four years since the last season came out, and the writers and directors have seemingly forgotten the plot.
This season picks up after everyone has graduated from high school and their lives have all taken different paths than they thought.
The only interesting or worthwhile plot focuses on the main character, Rue Bennett (Zendaya), who has become a drug runner for Laurie (Matha Kelly) to pay off a debt she took on in high school. She is later recruited to manage a sketchy strip club by a man named Alamo (Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje).
Her plotline thickens when the FBI approaches her with a potential life sentence if she does not agree to become an informant.
Rue is a drug addict who is trying to better her life, but she keeps getting caught in the wrong place at the wrong time. The only reason the show keeps running is that viewers want her to succeed so badly that they brush off the other plotlines, even though they often aren’t interesting.
With about five different storylines going on at the same time, the show moves pretty slowly plot-wise. It can be kind of hard to pick up on small details and hints because each character has their own issues and chaotic life, and it is hard to keep track of at times.
The director, Sam Levinson, has completely thrown out the aesthetic that made the show so popular in the previous seasons and switched to something entirely different.
The show was originally meant to portray a group of typical high schoolers with their everyday drama. It has now shifted to something entirely different that honestly makes it less and less interesting to watch with each passing episode release.
Overall, aside from the one plot that could have potential if done correctly, the rest of the show has taken a turn for the worse.
