The musical version of Little Shop of Horrors balanced comedy and horror recently at the Pittsburgh Playhouse of Point Park University.
Based on the 1960 film by Roger Corman, the musical features music by Alan Menken and lyrics by Howard Ashman, and it was directed at Point Park by Michael Campayno. The story follows Seymour, a shy flower shop worker who discovers a strange plant that changes his life in mysterious ways.
The cast gave strong performances throughout the show. Braden Max Stroppel played Seymour with sincerity and emotion, while Mariana Sarmento impressed the audience as Audrey, especially during the performance of “Somewhere That’s Green.” Their chemistry during “Suddenly Seymour” made the relationship between the characters seem heartfelt and realistic.
Logan Johnson also stood out a lot as the cruel dentist Orin, bringing humor and energy to every scene. The Greek chorus of Chiffon, Crystal, and Ronnette added excitement and comedy with their vocals and stage presence.
One of the most memorable parts of the production was Audrey II, the giant carnivorous plant designed by Stella Frazer. The puppet looked realistic and unsettling, especially combined with the dark lighting and detailed Skid Row set design.
The music, acting, and overall production worked together to create a balanced comedy and horror. Point Park University’s production of Little Shop of Horrors was entertaining, funny, and visually impressive.
