Despite starting with one of the most interesting concepts in recent entertainment, the K-drama Phantom Lawyer falls into sappy romance tropes after only two interesting arcs.
The show follows the career of Shin Yi-Rang, who starts his own law firm after he’s rejected from every other firm due to his late father’s corruption scandal. However, the building he leases once belonged to a shaman, and he begins to see ghosts.
Yoo Yeon-Seok, who plays Shin Yi-Rang, does a wonderful job expressing the character’s emotions. His skill as an actor also shines in scenes where the ghosts – ranging from gangsters to teenage idol trainees – possess him.
Supporting actors in the show similarly jump from comedic to emotional scenes with ease.
Both the actors and the producers of Phantom Lawyer play the mystery very well. Their use of red herrings, converging storylines, and plot twists makes the show addictive for viewers.
However, while the first few episodes are entertaining and full of suspense, the series loses its charm when the female love interest, Han Na-Hyeon, finds out about Shin’s abilities.
Overall, Phantom Lawyer’s intrigue was stunted when it started falling into the typical sappy K-drama tropes.
