Traditional art encourages more commitment

Traditional art has been used to express ideas and feelings for centuries, way earlier than when digital drawing even existed.

Traditional art costs less than digital art because artists have to pay a monthly subscription fee for good digital art programs.

It is cheaper to buy a pencil and some paper than it is to get a whole device or program. This accessibility allows younger people to begin drawing and develop skills early on.

Using digital art leads to the artist losing the authenticity of drawing with traditional art supplies. An artist loses the feeling of using a real brush or pencil when using a stylus.

Furthermore, when an artist is drawing on their screens, they increase their screen time, which is already an issue for many kids. A digital art artist also can get distracted by a notification. An artist does not have to stop creating if their device does not charge or runs out of charge if they are doing traditional art.

Traditional drawing is more of a commitment since artists cannot simply use an eraser tool or undo their mistakes instantly. It is a more permanent process that encourages artists to improve.

It has a physical presence that digital art can’t recreate. A real art piece can be on display in homes or museums.

Traditional art can be held for centuries if taken care of properly. For years, paintings have been used as historical artifacts. Digital art can be lost or become outdated because of how much technology has grown over the years.

Traditional art forces artists to draw effects themselves instead of just having the features to change brushes or autofill through a drawing program. It keeps techniques that have been used for years alive.

Overall, traditional art offers a better experience than drawing digitally.

Digital art offers more freedom

Drawing digitally conveys the same amount of emotion as drawing traditionally. The difference is that digital art allows much more freedom.

Art programs provide different brushes, a full range of color, and the ability to adjust whatever is needed. Using traditional media limits artists to what materials are available, often leading them to spend more money on art supplies.

There are many drawing programs that cost money or have a monthly subscription, but there are also just as many that are free to use.

Much like traditional drawing, completed artwork depends on the artist’s abilities rather than the medium that is used. Unlike art supplies, where higher quality materials are easier to use than cheaper ones, free art programs have many of the same convenient features as costly programs.

Other features, like blending modes and flipping the canvas, can help artists with rendering their work and keeping it from looking lopsided.

Oftentimes with traditional media, artists have to be very careful with colors and rendering. Using the wrong materials in the wrong way could make a finished piece feel disappointing.

Digital art allows mistakes to be fixed relatively easily, so long as artists understand how their program works and the best methods to use.

Drawing digitally is also easier to do in any location, since it can be done on a phone. Having to pack a sketchbook, pencil, pens, markers, and other materials to draw somewhere other than home takes a lot of storage in bags, which could make it difficult to keep track of other personal belongings.

Preserving artwork is also much easier digitally. Everything can be stored in a program, while traditional drawings are stored in sketchbooks and can become damaged or faded over time, especially sketches or finished works done with pencil.

Sharing artwork with others is also easier to do digitally. Instead of having to take a picture of a drawing and edit it to make it look right, artists can download their pieces from art programs and easily share them.

Overall, drawing digitally is much more convenient and still just as fulfilling as drawing traditionally.
