Asking people to put down their phones seems like an almost impossible task today. Still, singer Florence Welch on her Everybody Scream tour insists upon it at every show during the encore, while she performs her most famous song, “Dog Days Are Over.”
On Saturday, Florence + the Machine performed in Atlantic City
Florence + The Machine’s music is already ethereal to listen to, but the tour is a completely separate experience. The show really leans into the atmosphere of enchantment, especially during the songs “Cosmic Love” and “Free.”
There was a focus on musicality, with one part of the show highlighting a harpist’s solo. It was interesting to see so many different instruments, including Florence’s voice, work together to create a symphonic harmony.
Florence is known for her personality and her connection with her fans. During multiple points of the show, she went out into the audience and walked around to give hugs and hold hands with people in front of the barricade.
The backup dancers, whom Florence called her “witch coven,” were a standout part of the concert. The energy and dedication to the choreography created a visually impressive show.
Adding to the visuals were Florence’s purple dress and the dancers’ outfits, which seemed inspired by older styles with long ruffled skirts and blouses.
Everybody Scream, the band’s most recent album, boasts songs such as “Buckle,” “Symphony Magic,” and “One of the Greats,” all of which were performed at the concert.
However, a big disappointment was the setlist. Florence + The Machine played many of their older, less popular songs instead of playing most of the Everybody Scream album, which would have been a nice addition to the show.
Overall, the Everybody Scream concert was impressive, from the visuals to the consistency of Florence’s voice, but a focus on the album that the tour celebrates would have improved the show.
