Laufey’s deluxe album, A Matter of Time: The Final Hour, adds five new songs to the record, with each contributing to the album’s themes of love, anxiety, and self-discovery.
The first of the new tracks, “Seems Like Old Times,” is a vocal jazz track with a smooth, retro feel. During the song, the tempo speeds up, introducing heavier piano and light drums. This keeps the listener’s interest in the song.
“Madwoman” keeps the same vocal jazz but also introduces pop into the song as well. The lyrics talk about a chaotic but enticing romance, giving the song a fun story. The song’s tempo is quick while the lyrics are not repetitive, making this song a great song for jazz-pop listeners.
“How I Get” reintroduces a theme from “Sabotage,” a track on the original album: Being scared and losing oneself when in love. Both songs use eerie instrumentals such as the cello, which gives them that ghostly sound.
These five new tracks connect well to the overall feel of the album and flow smoothly. The first two songs are upbeat and talk about the honeymoon stage of love, with the last three songs discussing the other side of love.
Even with a great deluxe album, there are still some flaws. The tempo changes frequently with each song, and the use of different instruments switches with each track, making the vibe inconsistent.
Overall, the additional tracks strengthen the album. Classical jazz and jazz-pop fans will likely enjoy these new tracks.
