From crowd-wide call and response to mesmerizing solos and enigmatic sounds, the Japanese jazz musician Masayoshi Takanaka puts a new spin on interactive concerts.
Monday night at California’s Hollywood Palladium, 73-year-old Takanaka performed the final show of the U.S. leg of the City Pop Waves: Super Takanaka World Live tour. Takanaka’s first world tour, following a rise in international popularity after years of popularity in Japan, seems to be his last.
The energy brought to the show was impressive. There was nothing but pure joy emitting from the crowd, with nearly 4,000 people watching in awe as this unforgettable legend performed.
Takanaka played a variety of different guitars throughout the night, ranging from a sunburst Fender Telecaster to a custom 13-pound, bright red guitar modeled partly after the Fender Stratocaster, made by Japanese luthier Takeda Yutaka.
Even with such a catalog of guitars, his tone remained consistent, resonating throughout the Palladium, bringing a sound like no other.
Of the songs played, each one added new solos not recorded before, and some were songs on albums not available in the United States, such as his 1981 studio album, Rainbow Goblins.
Takanaka played the whole show with a smile on his face, as did his supporting band. Everyone in attendance was smiling also.
