Puscifer’s Normal Isn’t strays away from previous projects, but their inspirations are apparent.
Frontman Maynard James Keenan, best known for his work as the lead singer of alternative rock band Tool, joined vocalist Carina Round and musician Mat Mitchell to form Puscifer back in 2003. Since then, they have released four studio albums and several EPs.
Puscifer has taken noticeable inspiration from the likes of Depeche Mode, the Cure, and numerous other staple bands of many genres. This album, on the other hand, explores experimental, frequently forgotten formats.
The album’s title track is a prime example of this. Opening with a strong focus on the drums and guitar, it aligns itself with a heavier sound, while Keenan’s vocals drag out somewhat akin to David Bowie’s singing. This is further expressed through the use of a synthwave-style electronic sound.
Another notable track on the album, “A Public Stoning,” pulls inspiration from early ’90s grunge while maintaining its electric touch. The track begins with a droning bass with a raspy tone. This then leads into layered vocals and drums with an offset time signature, which was typical in most Tool tracks.
Reinforcing their role as a staple of the experimental genre, Puscifer has refined their ever-changing sound while still paying homage to the greats of the past.
