Season 4 of the Hulu original series The Secret Lives of Mormon Wives brings more drama than ever before.
The show originated when a group of moms on TikTok created content together and stirred up so much drama that they were given a TV show to have somewhere to compile their life issues. The series centers on nine women raised in the Mormon Church who are now breaking away from the traditional housewife and mother role in their culture.
The new season brings back the same conflicts as previous seasons, plus a few new ones. The show is a typical reality TV show in every sense of the term; whether that is considered a good thing or a bad thing is up to viewer interpretation.
Some of the fighting and issues have been dragged out for far too long, and others seem to be almost staged or planted by the production to stir up more fighting. Most of the “resolving” is actually just saying the same ideas over and over again, with no accountability or apologizing.
While the show does address some serious issues – like sexual abuse, marital issues, and stereotypes around women being housewives – the petty, high school level drama can often take away from the representation of the issues that need to be talked about more.
Another takeaway is how quickly this season was produced and released. For example, Season 3 came out less than six months ago. All of these seasons have been filmed in such a rapid succession because there is always more drama to address.
Overall, this series is compelling and easy to binge for viewers looking for drama, but there needs to be more depth if it’s renewed for a fifth season.
