Mitski’s eighth studio album, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me, maintains her themes of difficulty in life and love.
It has been about two years since Mitski’s last studio album, The Land is Inhospitable and So Are We. Her new release musically continues where she left off in her last one.
The album was introduced a month before its release with “Where’s My Phone?” as the first single. Mitski describes looking for her phone as a metaphor for anxiety and wishing for an escape, using fuzzy guitar sounds to represent those feelings.
“If I Leave” explores the themes of love and fear of abandonment. Mitski expresses that while her partner would be able to move on after breaking up, it would be impossible for the singer because she believes her partner is the only one who understands her.
“I’ll Change for You” explores similar themes. However, this song shows the singer trying to maintain an already difficult relationship. She promises to change herself out of desperation, but her promise is not genuine.
Many songs in this album, other than “Where’s My Phone?,” begin with a soft, soothing melody that may become more intense and emotional as the song goes on. It is enjoyable, but it quickly becomes repetitive and does not live up to what the first single suggested.
Although “Where’s My Phone?” raised expectations that are not quite met, Nothing’s About to Happen to Me is a mostly pleasant and calming listening experience.
