Bruno Mars’ first solo album since 2016, The Romantic, features his usual yearning, romantic lyrics. The album also explores newer musical styles for Mars.
Mars showcased his beautiful lyricism on the entire album, especially on “Risk It All” and “Nothing Left”.
“Risk It All” features the lyrics “Say you want the moon, watch me learn to fly” and “There’s nothing I wouldn’t do, I’d risk it all for you.”
In this song, Mars displays his usual yearning for his significant other, saying he would do anything to be with her. This song is intended to be a wedding song, which is displayed in the music video.
This song also features mariachi-style instruments, which is new for Mars.
In “Nothing Left,” Mars describes his feelings towards the end of a relationship. The lyrics “Feels like I’m reaching out with nothing left to hold on to” and “All alone in this home that we built just thinking of you” both describe his significant other starting to become uninterested, while he is still madly in love.
This song also features a newer music style for Mars. This features country-style instrumentals, surprising fans. This is not Mars’ usual beat. While unusual, this style works well for Mars, as he sounds good all the time.
He also displays his usual fun, upbeat style on his lead single for the album, “I Just Might.” Overall, The Romantic brings back Mars’ familiar lyricism and newer instrumentals.
