The opening scene of The Moment, made by A24, is pure, aggressive strobe lighting, which adds to the atmosphere of the movie, but could also make viewers feel sick.
About pop star Charli XCX’s struggle to maintain her “brat summer” fame, the film explores her experiences in rehearsal for a tour through a mockumentary. A fake documentary, The Moment is unlike any other movie.
With extreme close-ups and odd camera angles, moviegoers feel that they are truly invading the life of Charli XCX and her staff.
There are many conflicts, from the one between Charli’s creative director and documentary director to the fake brat credit card crashing the bank. The viewer can feel the impending stress as Charli tries to maintain and grow her image while also keeping the creative elements that make her unique.
But in classic A24 fashion, the movie is slightly disturbing and pulls at the viewer’s heartstrings at the same time.
One of the standout moments is Charli’s closing monologue over a phone call to her tour’s creative director. Anyone who has ever felt the immense pressure to act a certain way or be excellent would sympathize in this moment of vulnerability. Such a raw moment, which is so well written, is certainly the best part.
However, the marketing has put the movie into a comedic light, even though the movie is extremely dramatic.
As the story progresses, it becomes evident that Charli and her creative director’s vision for the tour is being questioned, with the stakes mounting as Charli faces a choice between creative autonomy and individuality, or fame and success. It reflects the true and raw life of a pop star – not glamorous or perfect, but surprisingly depressing.
The movie’s title makes sense as the story progresses. Brat is a moment, and cannot be replicated or overused.
Fans of Charli, A24, and dramatic plots will enjoy it. For others, perhaps wait until The Moment comes to a streaming service near you.
