Having a job pays off in many ways

Having a part-time job can be very beneficial for teens to learn essential life skills.

Time management skills are extremely important going into adulthood, so learning them as a teen is essential. Working a part-time job is the perfect way to gain these skills, as teens have to manage their time between school and work, and sometimes sports.

Managing time well is essential for teens who are working. Rather than coming home and taking a nap after school, they can do homework. They can do homework on breaks as well, and they will not have to stay up late studying.

If they have too much homework and cannot work during the week, they can work on the weekends to give them ample time to do both.

This will teach them to control their time and learn skills that will help them down the road.

It also teaches them responsibility, as work is more of a responsibility than school.

Being absent from school is not as big a deal, as no one is depending on them being there. At work, though, most times, there is only one person there to do a specific job. If that person is not there, it affects everyone.

This teaches a sense of responsibility, as they know that they have to be on time and reliable for their managers and coworkers.

Having a job also helps teens gain work experience, which can help them in adulthood. If they are known as a reliable employee, that gives them a better reputation for the future.

Also, teens interacting with supervisors and customers can help them develop social skills they may not gain from peers.

While having a job could take away some opportunities for teens, there are always events to go to. Teens may miss a few sports games, but there are multiple games a week, and they should be able to find a game to go to in order to have that teen experience.

They also still have plenty of time to volunteer. On the days that they are not working, they can volunteer. While this can be exhausting, everyone should know their limits, and they should take time to rest.

Overall, working as a teen is beneficial for learning life skills and preparing for future college and job opportunities.

Jobs have hidden costs for teens

Having a job while in high school has too many negative effects on teens.

A student’s main priority during the school year should be their schoolwork. Oftentimes, high school students have lots of homework to do each night, and working a job takes away from the time that can be spent completing it.

Working on weeknights leaves students not returning home until late at night. Completing homework and studying after work leaves students going to bed much later than they should.

Lack of sleep leads to exhaustion, which can cause students to fall further behind on their schoolwork.

Another issue with having a job in the teen years is the inability to experience other opportunities.

Especially for students who wish to attend college, volunteering and participation in clubs is favored over a job. Jobs prevent students from being able to take other volunteering opportunities, which would better prepare them for college.

Jobs also take away from the teen experience.

Many teens enjoy hanging out with their friends, and it is important for them to have a social life. But working takes teens away from the fun memories they could be making in their young teenage years and can cause them to feel left out.

Jobs are also physically demanding. Many require employees to stand for long periods of time or carry heavy items, which causes strain on the body. Teens should hold off on this to preserve their body instead of causing damage so young.

Overall, teens should hold off on getting a job until they reach adulthood and enjoy their teenage years.
