Nick Jonas ends his five-year long break with his solo pop album, Sunday Best, which features soothing songs with topics of love, dedication, and self-discovery and doubt.
Jonas also explains how his family helped shape the man who he is now.
“Sweet To Me”, the opening track, alludes to his life with Type 1 diabetes. The song starts off with a calmness and guitar, eventually transitioning into an upbeat anthem. The song goes from a tranquil melody into a pop-punk vibe, symbolizing his life before and after his diagnosis.
The third track on the album is “I Need You”, which primarily talks about his deep love for his wife, Priyanka, and his daughter, Malti. He describes his connection with his family using piano, acoustic guitar, and even string instruments.
The following song, “Gut Punch” covers his struggle with self-image and talks about overcoming his perfectionism. He uses strong vocals and drums to show his internal battles. He also illustrates his new life as a father, and his internal pressure to be a perfect father and husband.
Overall the album is great, with few setbacks. One issue is the length of the album, being only 11 songs long. This album strays from his other releases, such as his self-titled album, which has 24 songs.
Otherwise, though, it does well with signifying the imperfections in his life and the realities. Pop and contemporary music fans will enjoy this album.
