In the animated family basketball movie, Goat, Will Harris (Caleb McLaughlin) has to overcome his role as a sports underdog.
The basketball-adjacent sport in this movie is called roarball. It is a full-contact sport for only the most quick and vicious animals in the movie.
Harris, a goat himself, is an aspiring roarball star from a small town in a world made up of only animals. He takes on the challenges of going pro and playing roarball while people dismiss him for his size.
His love for roarball had sprouted from his late mother, who loved the sport and always took him to the games of his favorite team, the Thorns.
Harris looks up to Jett Fillmore (Gabrielle Union), a leopard who is known as the team’s star. Fillmore is his favorite player, and he wants to be as great as her.
Despite Fillmore’s 15-year reign, she has never won a championship and is close to entering retirement.
The rest of the Thorns consist of Archie Everhardt (David Harbour), a rhino; Lenny Williamson (Stephen Curry), a giraffe; Modo Olachenko (Nick Kroll), a komodo dragon; and Olivia Burke (Nicola Coughlan), an ostrich.
The team is put through many mental and physical challenges while working up to play a game against their biggest opponent, a team featuring Mane Attraction (Aaron Pierre), who is an intimidating, arrogant horse.
Viewers are met with new, exciting visuals for each scene. This is the classic cliche of the underdog proving their worthiness to their peers. The movie has the perfect mix of a heartfelt story along with a lot of humor.
Overall, the movie is very well written with a very unique animation style.
