People We Meet On Vacation is a witty rom-com starring a “Type A and Type B” pair. Directed by Brett Haley, it brings Emily Henry’s novel to the big screen.
The movie focuses on Poppy Wright, an easygoing travel writer who is ironically struggling to make vacations sound fun anymore. Alex Nilsen, her friend since college, has always been keen on itineraries but is spontaneous when they are together.
The scenes alternate between past and present day, which keeps it engaging and catches the audience up to the current moment without feeling rushed. This choice of storytelling allows the audience to see all facets of the characters and connect with them better.
Every flashback genuinely furthers the plot rather than just being unnecessary filler. It makes the characters and story more appealing.
The dialogue is what really puts the “com” in this rom-com, with witty moments of humor, achieved through the use of dramatic irony and a mix of classic double entendres. The jokes are strong but never overpower the emotional aspects of the movie, and everything balances together nicely.
Actors Emily Bader and Tom Blyth, who play Poppy and Alex, do a wonderful job bringing the characters to life and work well together. Despite the two main characters being opposites, the chemistry between them is ignited well, and it is done in a manner that doesn’t seem forced.
Although the movie’s ending is extremely predictable, even for people who haven’t read the novel, this does not detract from the enjoyment of the story.
Overall, the movie is worth watching for those who enjoy a classic rom-com. People We Meet On Vacation is currently streaming on Netflix.
