We Fell Apart by E. Lockhart is a letdown compared to the previous novels in the series.
It is the third installment in the We Were Liars Series, which has covered a group of teenagers and their mothers over a period of several summers. Yet We Fell Apart features new characters who are only vaguely related to those featured in the previous two novels.
The story follows 18-year-old Matilda as she arrives at Hidden Beach to meet her father, a famous artist named Kingsley Cello. Upon her arrival, her father is in Italy, so she spends the summer with her half-brother Meer, stepmother June, and two other young adults living in the home, Tatum and Brock.
Though there are some references to characters in the previous two novels, We Fell Apart follows all new characters, which is disappointing for fans who were hoping to read more about the original characters.
The plot is quite predictable, which makes the surprise elements not very shocking. Also, Matilda’s father comes into her bedroom at one point, but Matilda believes it is a dream, which is unrealistic.
The romance between Matilda and Tatum is forced, obvious, and boring. In the beginning, Matilda hates Tatum, which makes it even more obvious she would eventually fall for him. Their relationship is not entertaining to read about and feels unnecessary.
Overall, We Fell Apart is disappointing and had no real significance in the We Were Liars Series.
