Kelsea Ballerini captures the feelings after a breakup perfectly in her most recent country pop EP, Mount Pleasant.
“Emerald City,” a song about insecurity in a relationship, features lyrics like, “If she texts in the middle of the night when we’re lying in the bed, is it green?” and “I’m good as gold, but when she’s around, my true color comes out.”
These lyrics play on colors; the lyric about a green text is her asking her partner if the girl texting them is blocked. She also plays on the color gold, saying she is usually a good person, but when her partner’s ex is brought up, her true colors come out. She gets jealous and insecure.
“587,” meanwhile, features lyrics about missing an ex and realizing that the relationship is definitely over. She sings, “I heard you covered up your tattoo,” and “I guess it isn’t just a break between us. It’s a little more space between us.”
These lyrics perfectly capture the feeling of realization after a breakup. She was not sure if they were going to get back together or not, but her ex-partner made it clear that it was over by their actions.
“The Revisionist” is likely about Ballerini’s ex-husband. It features lyrics like, “In Chattanooga, young love wasn’t ready,” and “I’m here thinking ‘bout how to tell my daughter someday ‘bout that Holiday Inn.”
These lyrics represent Ballerini reflecting on her regretful young relationship. She calls that marriage a bad decision and says that she wishes she could erase it. She says she wants to call “The Revisionist” because she wants to take back her decision to get married before she was ready.
This short six-song collection is very personal, and these feelings she is talking about are realistic and relatable for many.
