WWE superstar John Cena defeated Domnik Mysterio on Monday to win the Intercontinental Championship and become the WWE Grand Slam Champion in his hometown, Boston.
This adds Cena to the list of superstars who have earned every single championship that the WWE had to offer throughout their career. Other notable such stars include The Miz, Shawn Michaels, and Jeff Hardy.
Earning the title of Grand Slam Champion requires winning four specific championships within WWE: a primary singles title, like the WWE Championship or World Heavyweight Championship; the Intercontinental Championship; a secondary singles title, like the United States Championship; and a tag team championship.
This objective is harder to achieve within the calendar year. Cena has done this. Cena won his first WWE Grand Slam Championship by winning the WWE Championship, United States Championship, World Tag Team Championship, and Intercontinental Championship.
Cena has been the face of the wrestling world for years, so it took surprisingly long for the WWE storylines to help him reach this mark. However, he is slowly starting to run fewer and fewer matches because of his age and eventual retirement.
Cena has been in the wrestling world since June 2002 and has been a consistent wrestler for the majority of his career. He has had brief stints as a heel under the Doctor Thuganomics gimmick.
He has also had moments in the film industry where he has played characters such as Peacemaker, Ricky Stanicky, and Agent Burns. A notable moment in Cena’s life that combined both of his careers is when he played Mr. Figglehorn in Fred: The Movie.
Cena’s more recent turn to baby face after his recent heel run brings a new sense of hope to his fans, as he is pursuing more championships and has the wrestling world behind him.
Winning the Grand Slam championship is a major accomplishment and is the ultimate top-off to his legendary run in wrestling.
