An android princess longing for freedom jumps from her kingdom in the sky and ends up in the care of two surface workers in the pilot episode of the animated YouTube show Knights of Guinevere.
Princess Guinevere, played by Eden Riegel, is the mascot of a monopoly company called Park Planet. One Guinevere android is made for a girl named Olivia Park, played by Lauren Kong, the daughter of the park’s founder.
Olivia mistreats her android, so the robot jumps from the sky-park and towards the surface world. On the surface world are two women named Frankie (Michaela Laws) and Andi (Zelda Khan Black) who, like most people, work for the park.
Frankie finds a broken Guinevere android and decides to fix it, though it is not confirmed if this Guinevere is the same one that jumped from the park. Andi joins her, but they are unaware that the android is being tracked down and will bring them great danger.
The art and animation are great, blending ominous moments with colorful ones. The director, Dana Terrace, clearly has more freedom with this story than she did in her previous work with Disney, The Owl House. The theme park, mass production, and Guinevere herself are all clear references to Disney, as Terrace creates a new, darker story reflecting her bad experience with Owl House.
There are a few issues with the pilot. The plot and direction are unclear, and there is an odd jump in time. Frankie, Andi, and Olivia are all children in the beginning, but Olivia looks elderly when Frankie and Andi are young adults.
However, this pilot episode is not ruined by its problems, using charming characters and a strong premise to start an unpredictable story.
