The new Bruce Springsteen biopic, Springsteen: Deliver Me From Nowhere, is the story behind his Nebraska album.
Jeremy Allen White, who portrays Springsteen, delivers a masterful performance of an artist struggling with the weight of fame, family, and pressure to release music. In his portrayal of an artist struggling with depression and trying to express himself through his art, he takes on the role with a passion not commonly found in film.
Directed by Scott Cooper, the film captures the essence of a struggling artist, an industry focused only on money, and the power struggle between artist and record label. Cooper shows the behind-the-scenes of the obstacles Springsteen had to overcome to put out the unconventional album.
The unpolished feel of Springsteen’s Nebraska album was viewed by record labels as an incomplete concept album with no marketable characteristics. White is able to show how Springsteen’s mental anguish led to him creating such a special album.
White’s portrayal goes deeper than that of just an artist. It reflects the struggle of a man who is lost. He knows what he wants – he just doesn’t know how to get there, and it eats him up.
White and Cooper have combined to make a powerful movie that captures the raw emotion behind Nebraska.
