One Simple Trick by Lovejoy is redundant and underwhelming compared to the band’s previous releases.
The album features many songs that are repetitive in terms of the instrumental elements. They all have a typical rock’n’roll sound with few standout moments, which creates a boring listening experience.
Lead singer William Gold has shown off his strong vocals in previous releases, but this album does not capture his fullest potential.
Songs like “Perfect Blue,” “With Rob as My Witness,” and “White Shark Cafe” all offer a repetitive and bland listening experience compared to other pieces released by the band because of how similar they sound to each other.
Some songs steer more towards the genre of pop in contrast to Lovejoy’s primarily rock presence. This applies to “Baptism” and “Monochrome,” which helps add some diversity within the album.
While underwhelming, Gold’s vocals do have a few standout moments that highlight his talent in this album. He has some mellow as well as more passionate and intense moments that showcase his range.
Overall, the majority of the songs are letdowns considering the quality of the band’s previous works. Lovejoy’s older music has more life and individuality, and it puts One Simple Trick to shame.
