Rivals stumble, and Man City eyes another treble

After surprising losses by their two top Premier League rivals over the weekend, Manchester City now has a chance to repeat their historic treble-winning performance from last year.

The team, led by striker Erling Haaland and midfielders Phil Foden and Jack Grealish, has moved to the top of the Premier League table. In England, winning the treble refers to finishing first in the Premier League and winning both the FA Cup and the Champions League.

After a dominating win against Luton Town by a score of 5-1 on Saturday, City moved into first place in the Premier League with 73 points. Then, Crystal Palace had a huge 1-0 upset win against Liverpool, and Aston Villa defeated Arsenal 2-0 after late goals by Leon Bailey and Ollie Watkins.

The losses left Arsenal in second place and Liverpool in third.

Manchester City’s path to win the Premier League is easy. They control their destiny, and if they win the rest of their games, they will win the title. However, if they lose, Liverpool or Arsenal could catch up and ruin the back-to-back treble seasons bid.

City has two big cup matchups this week, with Real Madrid visiting City for the Champions League quarterfinals on Wednesday, and Chelsea playing them in the FA Cup semifinals on Saturday. Madrid has never won a game at the Etihad, City’s home grounds, so City will play some of their best starters to advance to the semifinals.

City had defeated Chelsea six times in a row before drawing the last two outings. If City wins, they will play either Manchester United or Coventry City for the FA Cup finals. City has won the three most recent outings against United, including last year’s FA Cup final. Meanwhile, City hasn’t played Coventry City in over 15 years.

Manchester City needs to keep playing hard, and if they end the season right, they can win back-to-back trebles, a feat that has only happened twice in history.
