Tired of your Spotify playlists? The Purbalite is here to help with our Essential Listening series.

In their indie pop debut album, A Conversation Between Us, Cayley Spivey showed their talent for combining upbeat and happy messages with slow and sad ones.

Spivey, working under the band name Small Talks, released the album in 2019.

One of the singles, “Oceans,” is upbeat and has a fast-paced melody. However, the message is about fully committing to a relationship with someone who doesn’t feel the same.

The song “Teeth” showcases an unhealthy relationship in which the singer learned how to ignore the warning signs and only love the other person. The music is both slow and upbeat at times, mirroring the singer’s emotions about the other person.

While there are many songs about having an unrequited love, very few are about the other side. “Honeydew” is an energetic, catchy song. The chorus is memorable and easy to sing along to. It is about having to let someone down and reject them.

One of the few purely slow songs is “Never Made It.” That sound reflects the lyrics, which reminisce about a failed relationship and the fighting and making up that went with it.

While Spivey may be a newer artist, their talents shouldn’t be unrecognized. This album is a starting point for more amazing songs to be created.
