Tired of your Spotify playlists? The Purbalite is here to help with our Essential Listening series.

Mac DeMarco is known for his other albums, but “2,” his second studio album, provides much more than what fans might expect.

The well known song “My Kind of Woman” gained popularity on TikTok but there are many other promising songs on the album.

The most outstanding aspect to DeMarco’s “2” is the nostalgic and relaxing vibe that he brings. It is executed very well, as indie-rock is not often seen incorporating a relaxing and dreamy aspect to it.

His album dives into many different topics, varying from family stories to insecurities and love. Generally, all of them have the same signature sound to them.

One notable song is “Freaking Out the Neighborhood.” It had a moment of popularity on TikTok in 2020, but the song has for the most part fallen off the map in the indie-rock genre. The song goes over DeMarco’s apology to his mother for his weird choices and activities throughout his life.

A recurring idea in DeMarco’s album is relationship struggles and his inability to maintain them. “Robinson Girl” touches on this story in his album.

Some songs on DeMarco’s album are a little random, particularly “Ode to Viceroy,” which is not as good as other tracks.
