Deep Sea Vents offers an eloquent approach to folk and instrumental music. The album is a collaboration between yMusic, a sextet chamber ensemble, and Bruce Hornsby, Grammy-winning musician.

“The Wild Whaling Life” has sounds similar to a mystical fantasy game or movie soundtrack. It conveys a jubilant feeling, especially with its additions of brass and woodwind ad libs.

“Platypus Wow” has funky melodies that resembles New Orleans jazz music, with its unique enunciation of words and its fusion of brass and reeded instruments, taking the listeners right back to the 1930s.

“Phase Change” has a calming melody that is reminiscent of old Disney animated films. With its woodwind passages, it creates a peaceful presence and is truly art translated in auditory form. “The Wake of St. Brendan,” meanwhile, diverts from the recurring melody of the songs, as it starts with an eerie tune, similar to the soundtrack of a horror movie.

Overall, Deep Sea Vents is unlike most any modern album. It has a heavy incorporation of a variety of auditory elements and instruments. The lyrical aspects of all of the songs are both distinctive yet riveting. For music fans seeking something new, Deep Sea Vent deserves a listen.
