Chants of Sennaar is a beautiful game that offers a refreshing plot while remaining accessible to less experienced gamers.

The game takes place in a tower – reminiscent of the Tower of Babel – where people on each floor speak a different language. The people of the tower are divided and unable to communicate.

The player character progresses through the tower, filling a notebook with the various glyphs of the people in an attempt to reunite them.

The adventure puzzle game is unique in this aspect: The grammatical structure and stylization of each language is vastly different. Through communicating with the people of the tower, the player learns the languages.

The mechanics of the game are very accessible. The controls are simple, and the game does not require any knowledge of common video game tropes. Instead, the player relies on logic to solve its puzzles.

The language acquisition element of the game can be challenging; sometimes the context clues are not the clearest. Nonetheless, most translations are well-founded in the game.

In the end, the player reunites the groups by translating the glyphs between the various languages to restore communication among the people. This is a lovely culmination of the player’s efforts of learning the languages and a satisfying conclusion to the game.
