Scott’s tour re-energizes rap scene

Travis Scott has named his current tour the Circus Maximus tour. Travis Scott by Brandon Dull is licensed under CC BY 2.0 DEED.

Travis Scott’s Circus Maximus tour, which stopped in Pittsburgh Friday at PPG Arena, rejuvenates the energy not entirely present in the recent rap industry.

The Pittsburgh installment of the tour, also known as the Utopia tour, drew a massively packed crowd that produced an insane level of energy that is typically missing from modern concerts.

Ranging from the set design, seemingly designed to resemble ancient Egyptian deserts, to the special effects and pyrotechnics, Scott put on an impressive show, but the highlight was truly the crowd engagement.

One of the most memorable moments of the show was when Scott performed his song “Fe!n” eight times in a row, after continuous “One more time!” chants from the crowd. Fans seemed to gain energy with each repetition, and continued to chant the lyrics to “Fe!n” long after the show’s conclusion.

Throughout the show, Scott also pulled multiple “ragers” – fans – onto the stage to ride a large, face-like rock called The Parasail, which slowly floated over the audience.

Scott’s setlist had a perfect balance between tracks on his latest album, Utopia, and fan favorites, such as “Goosebumps” and “Sicko Mode.

The concert also had a unique atmosphere outside of Scott’s performance.

The stage was set up in the middle of the venue, with seating fully surrounding the arena, and cricket sounds played in between sets, rather than the typical radio tunes.

The opening act, Teezo Touchdown, performed a simple yet meticulous set, including his own props and unique costumes. It was refreshing to see an opener allowed to have full creative freedom to make the stage their own.

Teezo returned for his feature on Scott’s track “Modern Jam,” giving him another opportunity to portray his talent and live vocals.

Overall, Scott’s trademark raging personality was perfectly encapsulated throughout his sensational performance and showman skills.
