Competition close between consoles

PS IV Vs. Xbox 1
BY IAN MCGEE
Staff Writer

The next generation gaming consoles dominated the tech world this season, each selling 1 million units in their first 24 hours on the market. The PlayStation 4 and the Xbox One, the two frontrunners in the gaming scene, are vying for that empty space in consumers’ living rooms.

The PlayStation 4 has been the more anticipated of the two systems. The console is fixated on providing the best experience for gamers with a more advanced graphics unit than its competitor.

The console offers little in the way of system applications for entertainment, which is not necessarily a bad thing. It does what a gaming system is supposed to do–play games, rather than focus on things more fit for a smart TV or a computer. All in all, it feels like the more finished product.

The Xbox One was the predicted underdog for this generation’s console war. It doesn’t market itself as a game system, but more as a full-on entertainment center, the only thing people will ever need in their living rooms. It is able to connect to all aspects of the user’s living room, including cable boxes, TVs, or surround sound, and is able to turn them all on with voice commands.

The most criticized feature before launch, the Kinect camera, has actually been praised by many for the usefulness of the voice commands in operation, like being able to turn the console on and off, issuing orders in game, and switching apps. The user interface is clunky at times, and may turn users off.

Up against one another, they are pretty equal in terms of specifications and function, supporting some of the same apps on launch. For those looking for gaming, the PS4 is probably the way to go, but for those looking for something a little bit more, the One is definitely the one to buy.
