Whenever people are in dangerous, dire situations, they sometimes are able to step into leadership roles they usually would not take. Brentwood High School teacher Katy Phillips was one such person on Sept. 11, 2001.

Phillips was working in a building next to the World Trade Center in New York City during the terrorist attack on 9/11. Under pressure, Phillips was able to take charge and make it out of the experience alive.

Phillips has shared her story during collaborative district partnerships with history teacher Natalie Grattan over the years and at her own school, but this Friday she will be sharing her experience with Grattan’s Leadership Through Historical Example class.

“I am excited she can join us here at Baldwin to show how everyday people became leaders, and to lend a living experience to our students — many of whom were not even born in the year 2001,” Grattan said.

Phillips will be telling the leadership class her story Friday during second period.
