This year more than any other, the school dress code led to exasperation from the student body.
One big issue came early in the year, when girls with exposed shoulders were told to put T-shirts on. Fortunately, administrators are now allowing tank tops within reason, which is the fair and logical decision.
Rules for yoga pants and leggings should also be reviewed, as those styles have become fashionable. Spandex is banned, yet these articles of clothing are not inappropriate for people to wear in an educational setting. The school board should revisit these clothing articles and allow them to be worn during school.
Another issue is the “fingertip length” shorts rule. Some girls have longer arms than others, making this rule difficult to follow. Also, it is difficult to find “fingertip length” shorts in stores. Many girls’ shorts are not considered an appropriate length by the dress code, but are not revealing or inappropriate.
There should be a compromise with the rule, as the dress code states simply that shorts may not be “extremely short.” As long as no one is inappropriately exposed, shorts should not be judged by the fingertip rule.
It is important to have a dress code to ensure an appropriate learning environment. But the district needs to realize that fashions change over the years, so the dress code should be revisited periodically.
