Jobs hindering teenagers’ success

BY ERICA KOENIG
Staff Writer

High school is the time to meet new people, go to football games, get involved in clubs and sports, and challenge oneself with honors and AP classes.
Trying to accomplish so many things can lead to a lot of stress, so why add to the pile by trying to maintain a part-time job during the school year?
During the summer, working that part-time job isn’t that difficult since there is a lot of free time and flexibility. Plus high school students might not even have to work that much because the college kids are trying to get their hours and money in before they head back to college.
But after the school year starts, the college kids leave, and high school students get back into the routine of the juggling act. The the working hours become more difficult.
Some bosses expect high school employees to be able to work more hours and more days to make up for the departed college workers. Students are trying to use their time wisely, working on homework and going to social events like any normal high school student.
Eventually the stress of trying to please bosses and teachers can become too overwhelming, and that’s when the emotional breakdowns begin.
Maybe some bosses are understanding or some students work well under stress and enjoy being so busy. In that case, keep that job.
Otherwise, students should drop it. While having money during the school year is a huge plus, if students really want to enjoy the full high school experience they should save the working for the summer and enjoy the four years here, which are sure to fly by.
