Getting new players to join a sport is not always easy, but for sophomore Mason Boyd, it was simple. This season, he helped bring two of his friends onto the lacrosse team, adding new energy and helping the team continue to grow.
“I got my friends into lacrosse by just telling them that it’s a fun experience,” Boyd said.
For sophomore Evan Staudt, the decision to join lacrosse was about more than just the sport itself. It was also about trying something different and becoming more involved.
“My friends and brother play lacrosse, and I wanted to try something new,” Staudt said.
While Stout was new to the sport, he still got a decent amount of playtime.
Sophomore Brody Sheaffer had a similar experience. After being encouraged by Boyd, he decided to join the team, even though he had never played before.
“I thought it looked cool, and I feel like I’m playing well for my first time,” Sheaffer said.
All three of the boys were defensive midfielders. They contributed to the depth on the defensive side of the field.
Starting a new sport can be difficult, especially when others already have experience. One of the biggest reasons both new players were able to adjust was because of the team’s strong chemistry. A positive and supportive environment helps new players feel comfortable and confident as they learn the game.
“We all help and support each other,” Staudt said.
As the season went on, Boyd noticed clear improvement in both of his friends. Seeing their progress has been one of the most rewarding parts of the experience.
“My friends are holding up pretty well for their first season,” Boyd said.
While Sheaffer and Staudt were new to the sport, they became key members of the team and improved with each practice. Boyd also got better this season, becoming a crucial defensive player
“I think all of us improved a lot during the season, and we became more comfortable and confident as we kept playing,” Staudt said.
The three boys played a key role in the team, and the upperclassmen appreciated their contribution.
“They all played well when on the field, and they brought great energy to the team,” junior Owen McLuckie said.
The team finished with a record of 7-10.
“Even though we did not have a winning record, we enjoyed our time playing and hanging out,” Staudt said.
As the season came to an end, each player reflected on some of their favorite moments from the year.
“Beating Thomas Jefferson twice was probably my favorite part of the season, because everyone played really well and the team was excited after both wins,” Sheaffer said.
Stout cited some team bonding moments.
“My favorite moment was playing hacky sack with the team before practices and games,” Staudt said.
For Boyd, it was recruiting his friends for the team.
“My favorite moment was getting my friends to play lacrosse with me and seeing them have fun with the team,” Boyd said.
