Most students consider themselves busy as they balance a few extracurriculars and schoolwork, but senior Mackenzie Bowen manages 14 activities, advanced classes, and a job.
Despite this, she still finds time to stay on top of her busy schedule and her social life.
“Since I’ve been doing so many activities for so many years, it’s second nature,” Bowen said. “Also, having all of my friends in the same clubs helps me keep track of meetings and deadlines.”
The National Honor Society’s president, senior Reese Temme, has been friends with Bowen since they played softball together in eighth grade
“Her time management is phenomenal. She does so much and finds a way to make time for everything,” Temme said. “She’s able to play two sports in the spring along with her clubs and manage around that as well.”
On top of managing her other activities, Bowen took charge of tracking service hours for members of the National Honor Society.
“She takes time out of her days to answer emails, update (service) hours, making sure everyone’s hours are in, and making sure everyone’s projects are in,” Temme said.
Bowen’s efforts were critical in ensuring that seniors were on track to graduate with an NHS stole and cord.
Her hard work is recognized by NHS members as well. Senior Reeya Bista said Bowen exceeded expectations in helping people turn in their service hours on time.
“If you don’t have your hours in, she’ll check in with you,” Bista said. “If you need to find volunteering opportunities, she’ll help you find them. I think there would be a lot more people who didn’t make it if it weren’t for her.”
Her time as a service leader has shown her the impact students have on the community.
“Something so small, like just showing up for someone, can have that ripple effect in making something largely impactful for the community,” Bowen said.
History teacher and NHS sponsor Christopher Reilsono has noticed her efforts and commended her for her discipline.
“She has a great heart,” he said. “She’s incredibly talented. She can connect with people and make them feel valued – a supportive friend,” Reilsono said.
Bowen is an inspirational force among her peers, Temme said.
“She’s very gritty and motivational. She’s the person you go to for advice or to cheer you up.” Temme said. “Despite her busyness, she makes time for all her friends when we need it.”
Bowen is also an accomplished athlete, excelling at softball, indoor track, outdoor track, and cross country. She has qualified for WPIALs in track all four years of high school.
Since the summer of her sophomore year, Bowen has been a diligent employee at Aerie clothing store, on top of her schoolwork and school activities.
Next year, Bowen is set to attend Duquesne University in their Business and Law 3+3 program.
“I look forward to seeing what she’ll go on to accomplish,” Reilsono said.
