The new Women’s Lacrosse League recently held its first game, featuring New York Charging and Boston Guard.
It was a great game in which nobody gave up, but New York ended up taking the win. Boston had the lead in the first half of the game, but New York took over in the third quarter and won 17-12.
Boston attacker, Charlotte North, scored the first goal in the WLL season. North is a well-known women’s lacrosse player. In college, she played for Duke University for two years, then went on to play for Boston College.
The WLL only has four teams at the moment, with the other two being the California Palms and Maryland Charm. Teams feature other well-known lacrosse players, such as Izzy Scane, Alex Aust Holman, and Ally Mastroianni.
At the collegiate level, there are 12 players on the field per team. However, in the WLL, all games are 10v10.
The league will hold an all-star game featuring two teams made up of all of the top players. There will also be a championship game at the end of the season. The top scorer of the championship game will win the Golden Stick Award.
There is even importance to the WLL logo. It features a woman’s stick head with a wing going across it, and the ball is sitting exactly where it would be in a woman’s pocket.
The men’s lacrosse league, Premier Lacrosse League, has been around since 2018. It is a really big step that there is now a professional league for women.
All games can be streamed on ESPN+. The next game is at 8:30 p.m. Friday with California playing Maryland.
