The Oklahoma City Thunder and the San Antonio Spurs are now tied 1-1 in the conference finals, and controversy has spiked after the Thunder’s win on Wednesday.
The refereeing has caused outrage with Spurs fans because of the obvious “flopping” that Thunder players are using to draw fouls. The Thunder are led by arguably the most criticized player ever when it comes to flopping, Shai Gilgeous-Alexander.
Thunder player Isaiah Joe seemingly threw himself at the ground and got the offensive foul, negating a San Antonio three-pointer. Another Thunder player, Isaiah Hartenstein, grabbed Stephon Castle by the hair and threw him down. There were other dirty plays by the Thunder, all without foul calls against them.
But while Spurs fans are angry, what they fail to understand is that it goes both ways.
The Spurs can’t seem to guard Gilgeous-Alexander without constant hand-checking or a hand pulling on his jersey, taking out the Thunder’s best player and consecutive two-time league MVP.
The stats hardly reflect the supposed referee scandal.
In Game 1, the Thunder had seven more personal fouls, and in Game 2, they were tied. This is more for the Thunder, but not by an unheard-of amount.
The Thunder did have seven more free throw attempts than the Spurs in Game 2, but the Spurs had 10 more in Game 1.
Overall, the bad calls are there and apparent, but they are not as bad as the fans are making them out to be, and they should instead enjoy what has been an exciting series thus far.
Game 3 will be at 8:30 p.m. Friday.
