After a standoff with the Steelers, quarterback Aaron Rodgers has signed a one-year deal, worth up to $25 million, with the team.
The signing has caused mixed opinions among Steeler fans.
If Rodgers plays well, he will start all season. However, that would cause issues, as that would limit game experience this year for young quarterbacks Will Howard and Drew Allar.
Allar and Howard would be mentored by Rodgers this season and could still get some game experience. Howard watched Rodgers last season as the team finished with a 10-7 record and a blowout loss in the wild card round of the playoffs. Allar threw for over 3,000 yards for two years in a row at Penn State, before he got injured last season.
Rodgers was solid for the Steelers last season, throwing for over 3,000 yards and over 20 passing touchdowns. The Steelers’ offense will be better with the addition of second-round pick Germie Bernard, a wide receiver from Alabama, Iowa wide receiver Kaden Wetjen, and Pittsburgh native Eli Heidenreich, a former Navy running back.
However, for the last five seasons, the Steelers have been mediocre, finishing with a 10-7 or 9-8 record. While Rodgers has won the Super Bowl in the past, history will likely repeat itself with another first-round playoff loss this year.
The Steelers will need to look into the future with how they should deal with the quarterback decision. If Rodgers retires or moves to a different team next season, the Steelers would either need to draft another quarterback or stick with who they have.
Currently, the team has Allar, Howard, and veteran Mason Rudolph on their depth chart. The team should stick with Allar or Howard as their starter next year. Even with not having much on-field experience in the NFL, Allar and Howard should have no issue getting on the field, given how the Steelers have built the wide receiver group.
