Many boys and girls track team members medaled at the 52nd annual Baldwin Invitational on Friday. The boys team placed 17th overall while the girls placed 18th out of roughly 40 schools participating.
The boys placed fourth in the 4×400 meter relay. The relay consisted of seniors Zach Lieu, McKinley Beech, along with juniors Logan Breisinger and Jack Reichel.
The girls 4×400 relay team also medaled, finishing in seventh place. The team consisted of seniors Jules Ott, Olivia Shellman, Maddie Grattan, and sophomore Alexa O’Malley.
The boys did even better in the 4×800 meter relay, finishing in third. The team included Lieu, Reichl, and seniors Alex Castaneda and Jackson Presto.
The girls 4×800 relay placed eighth. O’Malley and Ott were joined by seniors Molly Gorman and Mackenzie Bowen.
Individual medalists for the boys included Callen O’Malley, who placed seventh in triple jump; Breisinger, who placed fifth in the 300 meter hurdles; and senior Vince Broccoli, who placed seventh in javelin and eighth in shotput.
Sophomore Nasir Anderson appreciates Broccoli’s performance following the injury struggles he has had this season.
“He did great, especially coming off of an injury,” Anderson said.
Anderson said many of the team members have improved this season, including Breisinger.
“He has always worked hard to improve, and this is a huge accomplishment for him,” Anderson said.
For the girls, senior Olivia Shellman placed seventh in the 100 meter dash; Ott placed eighth in the 400 meter dash; and junior Becca Gruntz finished sixth in long jump and third in triple jump.
Lieu commended Gruntz on her performance during the meet.
“I think Becca did well in the long jump and triple jump. She placed really well and worked really hard,” Lieu said. “It’s just a testament to how hard she works during practices and meets.”
