The baseball team got knocked out of first place on Monday by losing to Montour 11-10
The game featured several lead changes. Baldwin led 7-4 going into the sixth inning, but then Montour hit a grand slam and a two-run homer to take the lead.
Baldwin tied the game 10-10 in the bottom of the sixth, but Montour got a run in the seventh to pick up the win.
The loss drops the Highlanders out of a first-place tie in the section and greatly reduces their chances of taking the section title.
The sixth inning was rough for the Highlanders.
“We let Montour get the best of us. We walked a couple too many guys,” junior Tyler Geary said.
Yet Baldwin fought back.
“In the bottom of the sixth inning we got three runs back,” senior Luke Thompson said.
When Montour took the lead again in the seventh inning, the Highlanders could not respond.
“They got one run, and in the bottom of the seventh inning, we ended up striking out twice,” Thompson said.
While the Highlanders struggled on defense, their offense was strong.
Senior Aiden Robinson stood out in this game, hitting a three-run home run to give Baldwin an early lead.
This game knocked Baldwin out of a first-place tie with Thomas Jefferson. While the team’s morale took a hit with this result, the players look toward their next games with optimism.
“We were definitely frustrated after losing the section off of this. But I feel like it’s only going to make us better, because it will push us harder now,” Geary said.
Geary believes this loss will help motivate players into putting their all into the WPIAL playoffs.
“We are going to focus on playoffs and get it done,” Geary said.
Thompson said Baldwin needs to bounce back and beat Montour tonight at their away game.
