After taking a commanding 3-1 lead in their playoff series against Denver, the Timberwolves will need players to step up after two big injuries this past weekend.
On Saturday, Anthony Edwards and Donte DiVincenzo both went down with lower body injuries.
After trying to block a layup, Edwards awkwardly landed on his left leg, which led to him hyperextending his knee. This injury could sideline Edwards for up to three weeks.
This comes after Edwards has been battling runner’s knee in his right knee throughout the playoffs and the later part of the season. If the Wolves advance, Edwards could be available to return later in the second round.
Less than two minutes into the game, meanwhile, DiVincenzo slipped trying to track down the ball after a missed three. This slip would cause him to tear his Achilles and end his postseason and possibly even his 2026-2027 season.
Boston Celtics forward Jayson Tatum tore his Achilles in May of last year and did not return until March of this year.
These two injuries could possibly derail the Timberwolves. Both players are major components to the team and have performed well in the playoffs. Edwards averaged 28.8 points per game in the regular season and DiVincenzo had averaged 14.3 points per game in the series.
For the Wolves, Bones Hyland and Ayo Dosunmu will have to step up. Dosunmu shined in Game 4 with a 43-point performance.
Dosunmu is now set to start for the Wolves after his performance. Hyland hasn’t performed greatly, but he has been a good bench player for the Wolves.
Depth has been something that the Wolves have excelled at during the season. They averaged 41.8 points per game off the bench during the regular season, which ranks first in the NBA.
Tonight, the Wolves will go into Game 5 needing a spark from other players to put this series away.
