The Baldwin softball team lost its first section game of the season on Wednesday, falling to Trinity, 4-0.
Junior Ava Bonacci credited Trinity for their strong mental approach.
“They had a better mentality (than us) coming into the game today,” she said. “They were on top of it from the start.”
Trinity also got a mix of strong pitching and defense, leading to the shutout.
The Hillers got out to a three-run lead in the second inning and got their fourth run in the sixth inning.
Despite the loss, Bonacci credited Baldwin for playing solid defense and keeping their spirits up.
“We stayed good at staying loud in the dugout,” she said. “I think we did well picking up our pitcher every inning and just communicating.”
Junior Melina DeFelice stood out for the Highlanders, Bonacci said.
“She didn’t give up and kept battling,” she said. “Even when it got rough out there, she kept pitching great.”
The Highlanders will face Thomas Jefferson at 5 p.m. today at home. A win for the Highlanders would make them section champs.
Bonacci said there are improvements the team should make going into today’s game.
“We need to stay more in the game and focus on each play, rather than thinking ahead about tomorrow,” she said.
