On Alumni Night on Monday, the boys lacrosse team defeated Seton-LaSalle, 9-7.
“Everything was good: Our transitions, athleticism, defense, and being physical worked in our favor,” senior goalie Alex Myers said.
“In the first half, we really ran up the score. We created a big gap at halftime, and the defense played really well. We had only let two goals in, so we were looking strong,” senior Evan Szpara said.
Going into halftime, Baldwin was leading 7-2. A few minutes into the third quarter, a fight broke out between the teams, leading to the ejection of three Baldwin players.
“It ended up being a five on three on defense, and that’s really hard to defend only having three of us. So they scored three, and they kind of brought themselves back into the game,” Szpara said.
The Alumni Night marked the 35th anniversary of the Baldwin boys lacrosse program. A bagpipe player performed as the Highlanders ran onto the field before the game, and again at halftime.
Although this game had its ups and downs, the team is happy with how their year is going.
“It’s quite the turnaround for the lacrosse team. It is the best we’ve ever played,” Myers said.
Although playoffs are out of the picture for the team, they believe they have a bright future ahead.
“It’s kind of just more practice at this point. Now, it is just getting the younger guys some experience, getting them in games, and trying to get them better for next year. It has led to teaching moments,” Szpara said.
The boys will play Freeport on the road at 6:30 p.m. today. It will be the continuation of a game that was originally postponed, and it will pick back up in the fourth quarter with Baldwin down 8-5.
